About Us

We provide of the entire range of services needed to build, manage and maintain commercial, industrial and residential properties and facilities.

Charlie Firth is a friendly and enthusiastic man with great practical skill. His construction and project management company BCM Construction has been building and renovating all structures great and small.

Charlie is the third owner of BCM Construction and they are celebrating 50 years of successful projects in Hamilton, Halton and even North America's commercial, industrial and residential sectors. "There is nothing we can't do" he confidently states.

Charlie tackles every assignment with a tenacious and dedicated work ethic. He doesn't just see a building: he sees opportunity. Using 'x-ray like' vision, Charlie's trained instincts can detect structural flaws like an MRI machine would catch a rare disease. He was originally trained as a plumber, earning his gas and steam-fitting licenses. These are two industries he warns can be extra hazardous. "If you're not scared of steam you shouldn't be working with it."

Charlie is one hard, yet smart worker. He once put in a marathon 36 hour shift with the Burlington branch of Maple Leaf Foods. Working for a company called Trademart, he managed a crew that was responsible for updating Maple Leaf's evisceration floor with a $47 million conveyer system. Once completed, they were able to double the capacity of the processing plant from 4,000 to 8,000 hogs a day. Talk about bringing home the bacon.

So what does a "Punch-out list" mean to you? In Charlie's industry it is known as a deficiency list but most married men will know it as the "honey-do" list. It usually consists of minor cosmetic repairs which just never seem to get done. It could be a strip of caulking here or a coat of paint there but "it's a dreaded nightmare" to a busy executive. With this expanding market, Charlie aspires to take his commercial experience and apply it to the needs of homeowners that just can't find the time for this type of specialized maintenance.

Flipping houses is another BCM Construction endeavor. This is a service for people who are ready to sell but aren't going to get the same kind of quality offers without fixing these little defects and details. A $1,500 job (made up of little jobs) could get $15,000 in the right market. The advantage of hiring a man like Charlie is his experience and ability to prioritize each task.

"When I worked in Florida I had a realtor with a client who wanted to list a house for $1.6 million" Charlie recalls. "The problem was that the client had lived there for 15 years and done nothing, in terms of up-keep or repairs." All of these little faults really accumulate and tend to limit the property value potential. Still, it takes a very keen eye to flip a house. Charlie's $3,800 investment allowed the new and improved property to list and sell for $1.82 million, earning him a tidy profit of $220,000.

Charlie is currently working with a company called Choices Inc. They are a nationwide nonprofit organization and a leader in developing systems of care. Charlie is helping to renovate some of their Hamilton locations. He recently met with Choices Maintenance Coordinator Richard Bell to discuss options for this noble cause. Charlie describes one particular patient who was difficult to transfer because of his special needs. "We rebuilt his bathroom and made it more than just wheelchair accessible." The patient's limited range and posture required some extra planning. Due to his experience with Proctor and Gamble, Charlie was able to modify a standard stainless steel grab-rail with a barrier free out-rigger to help this gentleman transfer his weight more comfortably. "It only costs a couple of hours and a hundred bucks but it makes life much more independent for the person."

Charlie knows what he wants and what he and his staff can handle. "I tell people right off the bat I want to do all your work, I get up way too early and stay up way too late to settle for one-off jobs… we build relationships." He works closely with Active Management repairing plazas and providing maintenance to commercial properties.

"Every restaurant has its own needs and Popeye's Chicken is no different." The franchise has 1,800 locations in the US and can be found in 23 countries worldwide. "They're big everywhere but here, and have now come to Canada with a bang" as Charlie states. BCM Construction have built five locations for them so far.

BCM Construction is contacted constantly for quotation requests. Charlie is what you call a BP (Blanket Purchase Order) Contractor. He has earned the trust of his clients who give him complete leeway to order the right part and recruit the right staff for the job. And while he admits his own ‘honey-do' list is lengthy he can certainly help you with yours.

Testimonial

"In a short, 10 week period Charlie and his team took a 2300 sq/ft existing restaurant and gutted it to the bare walls and then created a new state of the art restaurant to our exact specifications. They handled every aspect of this project from the initial planning stage through to our grand opening. BCM Construction did everything they promised they would and more! We highly recommend Charlie and his people."
